Who covers your address in Hawaii
Hawaii is organised differently from the mainland. There are no city police departments: policing is run by the counties, so the department that answers depends on the island you are on, not the town. The Honolulu Police Department covers all of Oʻahu, including Honolulu itself, and the Hawaiʻi Police Department covers the whole Big Island, from Hilo to Kona.
Maui County includes Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi, so the Maui Police Department is also the number to call on those islands. On Kauaʻi, the Kauaʻi Police Department’s non emergency dispatch line is (808) 241-1711.
Before you call
Have the address or nearest cross streets ready, a short factual description of what happened and when, and say straight away if the person involved has already left. Our guide on when to call 911 versus the non emergency line covers the cases that are not obvious.
